Analysis and separation results are estimates produced by signal processing, not definitive verdicts. Quality depends on the source recording.

Measuring tempo by tapping

Tapping is still the most reliable way to get the tempo of live music, a rubato performance or a song playing in the room — anywhere an algorithm has no clean file to analyse. Tap the beat with your finger, the spacebar or a mouse click, and the running average converges quickly.

The estimate uses a rolling window of your most recent taps, so it settles within four or five beats and tracks a gradual drift instead of being dragged around by one mistimed hit. Recent tap intervals are shown so you can see how steady your own timing is.

If you have the audio file rather than just the sound in the room, the key and BPM finder will usually be more precise, and it reports a confidence score alongside the number.

How to use the tap tempo

  1. 01Play or listen to the music you want to measure.
  2. 02Tap on the beat — quarter notes are the usual choice.
  3. 03Keep tapping until the reading stabilises.
  4. 04Reset and start again if you lose the beat.

Frequently asked questions

Four gets you close, eight to sixteen gives a stable figure. The average keeps refining as long as you keep tapping.

Yes — the spacebar works, which is usually steadier than clicking.

Tap the pulse you would count or clap along to. Tapping eighth notes will report double the intended tempo.
