Streaming services do not pay a fixed rate per play. Each month they pool subscription and advertising revenue for a territory, then divide it between rights holders according to their share of total streams. That means your effective rate moves with listener geography, subscription tier, and how many streams the whole platform served. This calculator multiplies your stream count by publicly reported payout ranges, subtracts the distributor or label cut you enter, adds an estimated publishing share of 12% of streaming revenue for the writer/publisher side, and finally divides by the number of collaborators. Use it for planning, not for accounting: your distributor statement is the only authoritative number.

What the numbers include

Recording royalties are paid to whoever owns the master. If you are unsigned and distribute yourself, you own 100% and only your distributor takes a cut (typically 0–15%, or a flat annual fee). Under a label deal your share is often 15–30%.

Publishing royalties — mechanical and performance — are separate and collected by a publisher, PRO or admin service. They are commonly reported at roughly 12% of streaming revenue and are modelled here on top of the recording side.

What is excluded: sync licences, neighbouring rights, merch, live income, playlist or radio promotion costs, and currency conversion or withholding tax on your payout.

Analysis and separation results are estimates produced by signal processing, not definitive verdicts. Quality depends on the source recording.

How streaming royalties are actually paid

There is no fixed per-stream rate. Most platforms pool subscription and advertising revenue for a territory, take their share, and divide the rest among rights holders in proportion to streams. The effective rate you experience therefore moves with listener mix, country, subscription tier and the month in question — published averages are exactly that: averages.

Every stream generates two separate income streams. The recording side is paid to whoever owns the master, usually reaching an independent artist via a distributor that takes a cut or a flat fee. The publishing side is paid to songwriters and publishers through collection societies, and it typically amounts to a much smaller fraction of the total — often in the region of a tenth of the payout.

This calculator models both sides, applies your distributor cut and splits the result between collaborators so you can see what actually lands in each person's account. Every figure is an estimate for planning purposes, not a statement of what you will be paid.

Frequently asked questions

Reported averages usually land between roughly $0.003 and $0.005 per stream, but there is no fixed rate — the payout depends on the revenue pool and listener mix in each market.

No. They are estimates based on publicly reported averages and are intended for planning and comparison, not accounting.

Distributor fees, publishing shares held by others, currency conversion, free-tier listeners and territory differences all reduce the figure. Estimates assume an average listener mix.
